Spirochetes
These helical heterotrophs spiral through their environment by means of rotating, internal, flagellum-like filaments. Many spirochetes are free-living, but others are notorious pathogenic parasites. Treponema pallidum causes syphillis and Borrelia burgdorferi causes Lyme disease.
