Alveolates

The alveolates are a group of protists whose monophyly is well supported by molecular systematics. Structurally, species in this group have membrane-bound sacs (alveoli) just under the plasma membrane. The function of the alveoli is unknown; researchers hypothesize that they may help stabilize the cell surface or regulate the cell's water and ion content.
