Stramenopiles
The stramenopiles are a group of marine algae that include some of the most important photosynthetic organisms on the planet, as well as several clades of heterotrophs. Their name (from the Latin stramen, straw, and pilos, hair) refers to their characteristic flagellum, which has numerous fine, hairlike projections. In most stramenopiles, this "hairy" flagellum is paired with a shorter "smooth" (nonhairy) flagellum.
